Thoughts on Success Part 10 (final)

Enjoy Each Day

Life is fragile, precious & uncertain. Living one day at a time goes a long way to creating success in our lives.
I am not an AA but I have been deeply influenced by the AA program. My uncle Stanley lived with us when I was a teenager. He was an alcoholic & joined AA’s while living with us. This took place when I was young & open to his influence. I read a lot of AA books & learned a lot about the AA program. In fact I still read a book daily called “Twenty Four Hours A Day”. It is printed by the Hazelden society. This is an inspirational book offering encouragement, support & wisdom. It has helped me in my spiritual & personal growth.

I have the greatest respect for people who follow the AA program. One of the tenants of AA is “one day at a time.” Here is a quote for March 18th. “AA tells us to forget about the future & take it one day at a time. All we really have is now. We have no past time & no future time. As the saying goes: yesterday is gone forget it; tomorrow never comes, don’t worry; today is here, get busy. All we have is the present. The past is gone forever & the future never comes. When tomorrow gets here it will be today. Am I living one day at a time?”
There are two days in every week that we need not worry about. One of these days is yesterday, the other is tomorrow. This leaves only one day – today. Anyone can fight the battles of just one day.

The Present
I was regretting the past
& fearing the future.
Suddenly my Lord was speaking:

“My name is I Am. He paused
I waited. He continued,
“When you live in the past,
with its mistakes & regrets,
it is hard. I am not there.
My name is not I Was.

When you live in the future,
with its problems & fears,
it is hard. I am not there.
My name is not I Will Be.

When you live in this moment
It is not hard. I am here.
My name is I Am.

Living one day at a time gives us happy memories of yesterday. A peaceful serene day today & a positive outlook for tomorrow.

I have enjoyed writing this little series on success. I hope you have found it useful. I will close with a poem about the only person who can decide how successful you are.

The Man in the Glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to the mirror & look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your Father or Mother or Wife
Who judgment upon you must pass,
The fellow who’s verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

Some people may think you a straight shooting chum
And call you a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum
If you can’t look him straight in the eye.

He’s the fellow to please never mind all the rest
For he’s with you clear to the end,
And you’ve just passed your most difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But the final reward will be heartache & tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.
