Holistic Management Canada is hiring an Ecological Monitor in Manitoba

Position: June to September 2023. Applicants must be 30 or under (this position is funded through the Youth Employment Skills Program). 

Location: Remote office in Manitoba with travel required.

About Holistic Management Canada:

Holistic Management Canada is a not-for-profit that supports farmers creating ecologically, socially and economically sustainable farms. We run programs and provide educational training to help people implement regenerative agriculture on their farms. 

We deliver the Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) program which assesses  biodiversity, soil health, and ecosystem function (water cycle, mineral cycle, energy flow and community dynamics) on farms. This helps farmers to understand if their land is regenerating, in a static state or degenerating.

Compensation and Hours: 

  • This is a summer position from June to September 2023. 
  • 35 hours per week
  • $22.50 per hour
  • Travel will be required and mileage will be compensated

Roles & Responsibilities:

This position will work with the Program Manager supporting and conducting Ecological Monitoring on farms. Duties will include: 

  • Pre-monitoring preparation 
    • Coordinating monitoring visits
    • Planning travel 
    • Gathering monitoring supplies
    • Printing forms
    • Site mapping on Google Earth Pro
  • In field monitoring and data collection
    • Communication and relationship building with farmers
    • Ecological Health Indicator monitoring*
    • Soil sampling*
    • Transect set up*
    • Plant species identification*
    • Taking and organizing photos*
    • Water infiltration tests*
  • Post- monitoring analysis
    • Data entry into EOV software*
    • Analysis using excel tables*
    • Writing reports*
  • Support with other organizational needs as time allows. 

 * Training will be provided for these tasks and the individual will become a Certified EOV Monitor through the course of the summer. 

Qualifications:

Our ideal candidate: 

  • Is comfortable and enjoys working outdoors in the field for full work days. 
  • Pays close attention to details and is observant
  • Has some familiarity with ecological assessment and data collection
  • Is interested in learning about plant species identification 
  • Is proficient with Microsoft Excel and has experience working with databases
  • Has some familiarity with Google Earth Pro or other mapping software
  • Has experience building rapport with others 
  • Can work remotely from home, and has a computer, reliable internet connection and a cell phone.
